Wien Energie
Wien Energie is the largest regional energy utilities provider in Austria. In this era where sustainability and reliability are paramount, Wien Energie ensures that the city's residents enjoy uninterrupted access to electricity, power, heating, cooling, electromobility and telecommunications. To promote climate protection Wien Energie plans to invest a significant amount annually to decarbonize its portfolio and to extend renewable energy production - all for the goal of a climate neutral Vienna by 2040.
Furthermore, Wien Energie is making significant strides in advancing in the field of circular economy. An initiative focuses on our incineration plant, where we process sewage sludge from Vienna’s water treatment facility - one of the largest in Europe. As pioneers in this sector, we are now planning and evaluating to implement a comprehensive circular economy system by recovering phosphorus from sewage sludge ash. This phosphorus recovery effort is closely aligned with the new Waste Incineration Regulation, which requires the recycling of 80% of phosphorus from sewage sludge by 2033. Our goal is to reduce the import of raw phosphate to Austria by recovering phosphorus, but furthermore we also want to contribute to the circular economy and reduce environmental impact.
We are actively seeking collaborations and partnerships in the field of phosphorus recovery.
Becoming a member of the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP) is our first step towards fostering collaborations, securing funding, and developing a market for recycled phosphorus. Additionally, we are interested in exploring further circular products derived from sewage sludge treatment.”
