One of the priorities of the Netherlands Government within its sustainability policy, is the promotion of the circular economy (from waste to resource). Focal points within the nexus food-water-energy is the way we can close the nutrient cycle and in particular the phosphorus cycle.
We build on the urgency of environmental costs of waste (water) management and the possibilities to build a European market for recycled phosphorus and our current knowledge and experience of decades of regulation, innovation and cooperation.
In The Netherlands we created a large network of business, science, NGOs and governmental agencies to collaborate in the product value chains of agriculture (animal manure, meat and bone meal ash), waste water management (sewage treatment, sewage sludge incineration).
